We all experience farewells in life. It’s an inevitable part of our journey. Today, let’s reflect on life, death, and living without regrets through the story of a woman who lost her son in a small village.
A Woman’s Journey to Find Salt
In a small village, there was a woman who lost her only son in a sudden accident. She couldn’t accept his death and was engulfed in sorrow. Even after the funeral, she couldn’t bring herself to bury her son and sought the village sage for help.
I haven’t been able to live peacefully since my son passed away. I thought you might have a way to bring him back. Please, is there any way?
The sage thought for a moment and then replied.
There is one way. For that, you need to bring salt. But it must be from a house where no one has ever died.
The woman, hopeful that she could bring her son back, hurried to the first house. She was able to get salt, but the homeowner told her that his father had passed away recently. So she went to the next house, but there, she heard a story of a wife who had passed away. She visited every house in the village, easily finding salt, but not from a house where no one had died.
Accepting Farewells
In the end, the woman realized. Farewells come to everyone, and we must accept them. An eternal farewell to a loved one is frightening and painful, but it is a part of nature. Just like flowers wither and fruits form, only to decay and give birth to new life, death is a part of life.
So, how should we live our lives? Moment by moment, loving to the fullest, and when it’s time to return to the sky, saying farewell in the best way possible. Isn’t that the most important task in life?
For a Life Without Regret
We all experience farewells with our loved ones. But to accept those moments without regret, we must live each moment to the fullest, loving deeply. If we live and love without regret until the last moment of our lives, our lives will be more meaningful and beautiful.
Author Song Jung-lim expressed this beautifully in her writing.
